Hypnosis – How Effective Will It Be For Me? by Alan B. Densky, CH

Hypnosis was accepted by the American Medical Association in 1958 as an effective course for treating stressfulness, and stress related symptoms. But does it really work, and what should a person look for when seeking a hypnotherapist, or procuring hypnosis tapes & CDs?

There are many assorted hypnotic methodologies that are used to reach the subconscious mind to invoke change. Each method has its pros and its cons. No two people are the same, so it only makes sense that the best results will be reached by utilizing the methods that each individual will react favorably to.

Most therapists who sell hypnosis tapes offer products that consist of standard traditional hypnosis methods. A few sellers offer much more fresh and effective Ericksonian Hypnosis methods. And fewer still offer NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques.

The newest and possibly most effective technique available is video hypnosis. Video hypnosis makes use of the latest Neuro-linguistic programming thought processes to create instant change in an individual. Video hypnosis methods are not subliminal in nature.

With “Traditional Hypnosis,” we simply make commands to the subconscious mind. In case you are wondering, as far as I’m concerned, the term unconscious, and subconscious are equivalent — they refer to the same part of the mind. This type of suggestion therapy works well for a hypnotic subject who generally accepts what they are told without having a lot of questions.

Most hypnosis tapes sold today are based on “Traditional Hypnosis” methods. This reason is because it really doesn’t take much schooling to author a script and just tell someone what to do. Unfortunately Traditional Self-hypnosis is not very compelling for people who are critical or analytical in their thinking processes.

By contrast, Ericksonian Hypnosis and Neuro-linguistic programming methods work far more effectively for most people today! This is because today people are taught to analyze everything they hear, rather than just do what everyone else is doing. So these technologies do work very well on people who are critical or analytical in their method of thinking.

While it’s true that these techniques have a much greater success rate at reaching and affecting the unconscious, it’s also true that it can years of experience and study to learn how to apply these methods efficiently. So this is a chore accepted only by dedicated hypnotists.

With “Ericksonian Hypnosis,” we use little stories; called hypnotic metaphors, to introduce new ideas to the subconscious mind. This is a powerful and effective discipline, because it usually eliminates the blockage of and resistance to suggestions that is often caused by the conscious mind. There are two types of metaphors, “Isomorphic,” and those of the imbedded command or “interspersal” nature.

Isomorphic metaphors offer guidance to the unconscious by telling a story that provides a moral. The subconscious draws a one on one relationship between parts of the story and parts of a negative behavior. For example, if a child is telling a lot of lies, the hypnotherapist might tell the child the story about the “Boy who cried wolf.” The subconscious would draw a comparison between the boy in the story and the child, and realize that telling lies could lead to disaster, so the child would probably stop lying.

With the Embedded Command technique, the hypno-therapist tells a story that distracts the consciousness. The story contains covert suggestions that are usually accepted by the subconscious. For example: While the subject is in hypnosis, he might hear the hypnotist say something like: I’m going to tell you a story about a [beach that has feelings. Isn't that] strange to [you]? It’s a warm summer’s day, and the beach [feels great].

The hypnotist pauses, shifts his voice tonality, and emphasizes the bracketed text. The unconscious recognizes a “Selectional restriction violation.” Beaches can’t have feelings. So it’s like the subconscious says to itself: “Wait a minute, a beach can’t feel anything, so that must mean that I’m supposed to feel something, and I’m supposed to [feel great].” Since the suggestions are hidden in a tale that is misdirecting the conscious mind, its unlikely that the conscious will realize that it has just received a command, so it won’t block it or resist it.

“Process Instructions” direct the unconscious to remember a past event of an experience from the past where something appropriate was learned, and then apply that experience to making a change in the present.

With “Neuro-Linguistic Programming” (NLP), rather than using post-hypnotic commands, we use the same methods of thinking that are creating a problem, like nail-biting or stress, to do away with the problem. NLP in the hands of an experienced NLP’er can be very effective.

NLP Anchoring: Have you ever heard some old music and had it recreate feelings from the past? When you originally listened to the music, you were feeling those feelings, and they unconsciously became attached to the melody of the music. So the song became an Anchor for the feelings. Now when you hear the song, it triggers the same feelings again.

Anchoring can be a very powerful methodology. Suppose that you have a memory of being commended for having done something well in the past. If you get inside of that memory, you’ll be able to revivify the feelings of self-esteem that you had at that time. If you touch two fingers together while you re-experience those feelings of self-esteem, that touch will become an anchor for the feelings of self-esteem.

Now suppose that you want to create motivation to stick to a diet and lose weight. If you make a mental image of yourself with a thin, sexy body, and simultaneously trigger the anchor – (press the two fingers together again), your unconscious will connect together the feelings of self-esteem to the image of you with the thin body and your level of motivation to lose weight will increase markedly.

NLP Flash: This is a very powerful and effective NLP method that can be used to “flip” things around in the subconscious, so that thoughts and experiences that used to trigger feelings of stress actually trigger relaxation instead.

The NLP Flash technique is also a powerful way to extinguish conditioned responses. For example: If a smoker has a cigarette while drinking coffee, his/her unconscious will pair the two behaviors together so that he/she automatically gets an urge for a cigarette anytime he/she has a cup of coffee. The Flash will cause the smoker’s mind to disconnect the image of a cigarette from the cup of coffee so that he/she does NOT get a compulsion to smoke just because he/she is drinking coffee.

With “subliminal” programs, the recording has dual tracks. One track contains a cover sound that is heard by the conscious mind. The cover sound could be anything from music to nature sounds. The second track contains direct commands that are listened to by the unconscious mind. These post-hypnotic commands are repeated many, many times during a session.

Subliminal programs can be played while you are watching a movie on TV. You don’t have to stop what you are doing and relax like you do with suggestion therapy or NLP. Subliminals can be used as an adjunct to hypnotism. But Subliminals will never replace Hypnosis or Neuro-linguistic programming because they are not as effective! They’re not even in the same universe!! Some experts claim that it can take up to 80 hours of listening to a subliminal recording before it will have any effect on many people.

The last method of hypnosis that we’re going to talk about is “Video Hypnosis.” Video Hypnosis is the most effective form of hypnosis! The techniques used in video hypnosis are based on the NLP technology, which works based on the utilization of a person’s existing thought processes instead of hypnotic commands.

Over 70% of the population learns much more quickly and automatically by seeing, rather then by hearing. Think about it. If you feel an compulsion to smoke or eat when watching television, it’s because your subconscious recorded the video image of either food in your hand, or a cigarette in your hand, and then bound that image with the visualization of the TV. You never spoke to yourself and told yourself in words to associate them together, am I correct?

And that’s why the Video Hypnosis mechanism is so efficient. Video Hypnosis is not hypnotic in the traditional sense, relying on the spoken word. But if you’ve ever shed a tear when watching a sad movie, then you know how practical Video Hypnosis can be at reaching the subconscious mind. With this technique, results usually start with the very first viewing!

I received an e-mail yesterday asking how I came by my “rampant creativity” and whether or not I produced a hypnosis download on this subject. I have never felt that my writing is particularly creative; rather I have what I think of as a “no-nonsense” style of writing. I just write about what I’m thinking; that’s it really.

Whenever I try to plan an essay, blog or article my logical plan gets in the way of my creativity; the words simply will not flow. The result is stilted and forced and, to be truthful, not worth reading. I am sure this is what happens when one gets writer’s block. Your logical mind is getting in your way. The problem with writers block is that as you become frustrated by your lack of words your creativity is further impeded; then you try to apply greater logical effort which once again blocks your creativity and a snow-ball effect ensues.

The way in which to overcome writer’s block is to stop what you are doing and relax. Your creative mind will not work when you are tense or frustrated or when you are trying too hard. Your creative mind also needs fuel. You need to look around you with new eyes; you need to be “in the now” and apply full attention and awareness to what is going on around you. As you become absorbed in really LIVING your life you are constantly stimulating your mind. If you live your life in a constant circle of thoughts, you block out your perception of “now”.

As you relax at night and drift off to sleep you will probably be aware that your dreams are incredibly vivid and creative. Your creative mind, your subconscious mind, comes to the fore as you relax. Hypnosis is the state between wake and sleep. Just by learning to use hypnosis you will learn to relax your mind and access the full power of your own creativity.

As many as one-fourth of all children cope with the embarrassing annoyance of facial tics. This condition can best be explained as a repetitive, continual spasm that affects the muscles of both the eyes and the face. The exact cause is often unknown, even though research shows a significant connection between stressful events and an increase in severity of symptoms.

Another explanation for the development of tics is a deficit in essential vitamins or minerals, such as magnesium. Some types of facial tics are symptoms of nervous system disorders, such as Tourette syndrome, a disorder resulting from a dysfunction of the nervous system. Their view of themselves is altered, and they no longer fear to experience the fullness of life. Youths who successfully this disorder can be freed from the paralyzing emotional pain that impairs their social lives, and experience childhood with joy instead of psychic pain.

On occasion, medications, such as mildly sedating drugs, are prescribed to this problem. Even though the medications may lessen the frequency or severity of these symptoms, the medications themselves can often cause adverse effects. Because of this, individuals frequently turn alternative methods to help them in treating their problem.

Two treatment methods that have provided promising potential in assisting people to overcome facial tics are hypnosis and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). These therapies capitalize on the strengths of the individual’s unconscious mind to help them control the spasm. Because these methods address the source of the problem through intervening in the unconscious where the problem originates, they are significantly more beneficial than traditional therapy methods that just attempt to control eye blinking, mouth twitches, squinting, facial grimacing, facial twitches, grunting, or other types of impulsive behavior.

Hypnosis allows the client to enter a restful altered state and accept suggestions that assist them to expel tension. Alternatively, therapists who use NLP assist the client to train his or her mind to use thoughts that stress them as triggers for thoughts that will relax them. In addition, the person learns to use an unrelated body part, like a toe, to express the stress that would otherwise be expressed by the facial tic. Through the use of this technique allows individuals to manage tension without resorting to the embarrassing impulse.

Another positive effect of these two therapies is that the person being treated does not experience adverse effects from medication type therapies. In fact, both hypnosis and NLP are typically viewed as the ideal treatment for individuals who suffer from tics, such as nose wrinkling, or throat clearing, because these treatment approaches do not have unwanted side effects. This relieves significant anguish and distress for the sufferer.

Summary: Facial tics are frequently socially damaging and can result in harmful consequences. Male children are most likely to struggle with this problem, which can last into adulthood; however girls may also have struggles with this. Although several treatment methods exist, hypnosis and NLP seem to be the most prudent treatments, because they have no problematic side effects and are very effective.

Progressive baldness and thinning hair in both men and women is something that can really affect self image and self esteem.

With men, however, it is something that is more or less accepted as a natural occurrence by society at large. In fact, about fifty percent of the general population experience normal hair loss by the time they reach 50 years old. We may not like it, but sooner or later half of us are forced to accept it.

Hair loss in women, though, is often perceived in a much different way.

Male pattern baldness is a very common occurrence which at the present time has no known permanent cure. It is something that is determined largely by genetics.

Its development can however be slowed down with the correct treatment. Read on for more information on this.

Alopecia is a form of hair loss that is a medical condition. It can occur at any age, though it generally affects females more than males.

There are several variations of alopecia:

Androgenic Alopecia

As mentioned above, this is the variation of alopecia which is commonly known as ‘male pattern baldness’. Often hereditary, this condition can in fact affect both sexes.

Treatment to slow down androgenic alopecia is available. Applying minoxidil (Rogaine) to the surface area and taking finasteride (Propecia) orally have proven to be beneficial here. So if this condition is affecting you, be sure to consult your doctor or health advisor about possible treatment.

Alopecia Areata

This is patchy hair loss, affecting different sections of the head, which tends to affect teenagers and young adults more than older people.

This can be a hereditary condition and for many – but not all – can be embarrassing yet temporary. In general, it last about a year or so. Changes of hormone levels during pregnancy can sometimes trigger the condition.

Alopecia Totalis

Some sufferers of alopecia areata continue to lose hair until they have none left on the scalp. This is known as alopecia totalis.

As the name suggests, alopecia universalis is the term given to loss of all bodily hair.

Telogen Effluvium

Temporary thinning of the hair, telogen effluvium is not restricted to the scalp and can affect all bodily hair growth. This condition can last for a few months and may be caused by certain medications.

Be sure to check with your doctor if you are taking medication which appears to increase your hair loss.

Hair Loss due to Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy.

Many people receiving treatment for cancer often experience total hair loss. Because this is a widely experienced and well known side effect, specialist support and wigs are available which can help until the hair regrows.

Hair Loss due to Hairdressing Treatments

Excessive use of chemicals, or a bad reaction to the chemicals used in hair treatments such as permanents, can result in hair loss. Long term and frequent use of too hot implements such as curling tongs and hair straighteners can also bring it on. In the latter case the hair cuticle will often become brittle causing it to break. The majority of those experiencing hair loss because of hairdressing will find that regrowth will occur when then stop using the trigger items.

Hair Loss in Children

Children can suffer from alopecia areata and any bald patches should be reported to a doctor promptly in order to begin treatment. Children may be referred on to a dermatologist specializing in hair loss.

Hair loss in children can be caused by trauma of the scalp and hair because of hair being too tightly pulled or plaited over a long period of time.

A more common reason is a fungal infection called tinea capitis which can affect head hair, eyebrows and eyelashes. When noticed, the child should be seen by a doctor.

Prevention and Treatment

In addition to the above mentioned medically prescribed pharmaceuticals and natural supplements it is wise to cover all bases.

Research has shown that some forms of hair loss can be caused by a lack of vitamins and minerals in the diet. It makes sense to make sure that you are eating a varied, healthy diet from a wide range of different foods. However if hair loss starts to occur despite healthy eating then a doctor can refer you for vitamin deficiency tests.

It may also be that a separate condition or medication could be preventing the body from absorbing vitamins and minerals from the food being eaten. Again, consult with your doctor in order to determine if this is in fact the case.

Stress is a recognised trigger for hair loss and this is especially so with alopecia areata. In this case, prevention of further hair loss means examining and managing daily stress levels as much as possible.

Self diagnosis is, however, not the ideal way to treat your specific hair loss type. If you are experiencing excessive hair loss it would be wise to see a doctor who can arrange tests and if necessary get treatment started, or refer you on to a specialist.

Knowing the medical definition of your particular hair loss is one thing, but coping with it emotionally can be very difficult and support is often critical.

It helps enormously if there is acceptance and understanding from the sufferer’s family and friends. This is extremely helpful as hair loss can seriously undermine the sufferer’s sense of worthiness, attractiveness etc and can even result in severe depression. If this is so, then your doctor or health adivisor will probably be able to refer you for counselling, self help groups and if necessary, refer you to a hair piece/wig service.

Hypnotherapy is also a valuable way of increasing self assurance, self esteem and self image while also helping you to manage stress and discomfort.

When you hear the word “hypnosis”, most people automatically think of some evil villain, hypnotizing his innocent victim to get them to do horrible acts. But, this is far from the actual truth and use of hypnosis today. In the early 19th century, hypnosis was used as a parlor trick, a way to make a quick buck by impressing the audience with a unique talent that could awe and scare everyone in the crowd. Today, hypnosis is used mostly as a therapeutic remedy for many things, including helping people to quit smoking, weight loss, grief, and even helping people with amnesia to remember their lives. The art of hypnosis is used all over the world now, and is a widely accepted practice in many of the medical and criminal justice circles.

Some specialists say that people will put themselves into a state of hypnosis on a daily basis when doing any of the following things: driving, reading, watching movies, or anything that requires you to tune out the rest of the world and concentrate on the task at hand. When you are in this kind of “state”, you are so engrossed in the task at hand, that you will usually be frightened or jump at a loud sound or something jumping out at you. This is considered a state of hypnosis.

The deeper states of hypnosis that are used for medical and criminal justice purposes involve a set of relaxation techniques that help the person fall deeper into this state that is between being awake and sleeping. So, if it is suggested that you can’t talk, you won’t be able to talk. If it is suggested that you smell roses in the air, you will smell roses. If it is suggested that you are eating a steak, you will taste the steak and be able to swallow it.

It is in this deeper state of hypnosis that people are very highly suggestible. This is why this deep state of hypnosis is great for those who long to quit smoking or lose weight or have other mental or health problems that can benefit from a stronger will towards the behavior. Being in a very deep trance, the hypnotist can suggest that cigarettes taste like something you hate, and over the period of a few sessions, you will come to realize that the cigarettes do taste like that food you hate.

Hypnosis can be very beneficial to people, if used in the correct way. If you are considering hypnosis as a treatment for anything, make sure that you speak to the doctor or therapist who will be doing to session and ask any questions that you have before you go in for your first session. Make sure that you are completely at ease with it, so you can relax completely while in the session. If you are comfortable and relaxed going in, the session and treatments won’t take as long to correct the behavior that you are seeing this specialist to accomplish.

Can another person really make you smoke? Now I don’t mean that first time, when you were 16, and you took that puff because your friends urged you to. I mean now, today, socializing with people who smoke. Do the smokers you know, and love, and spend time with keep you reaching for that thin white stick again and again?

And why are they doing it? Are their intentions evil?

Well, probably not evil. Just a bit selfish. And, more than that, convenient. You see, if you were to stop smoking, you would be proving it can be done. And if you are the same gender as they are, the same age, in the same social sphere, you would prove it even more. And they would no longer have an excuse. They’d feel ashamed. Every time they would think they needed to light up a cigarette, and you didn’t need to, they’d feel more ashamed.

So for the ones who don’t want to change, it’s better to keep you smoking, so you can keep them smoking, proving” to your entire social network, and those who love and nag you, that smokers simply cannot quit. Except for one thing.

I heard this story about a man who had a heart attack. Let’s call him Fred. Fred’s heart attack was serious. He was in intensive care for a while. In fact, he was at Death’s door for a while. And when his friends came to visit, Fred’s wife would stop them before they entered his room. If you have cigarettes with you, give them to me,” she said. A few protested that they certainly wouldn’t give Fred a cigarette, as sick as he was.

I’m sure you wouldn’t,” she said, but this way, if he asks for one you can honestly tell him that you just don’t have any.” That sounded reasonable to them, so they surrendered their packs to Fred’s wife without argument.

Funny thing was she never gave them back. Not ever. It turned out she didn’t happen to be around when they were leaving, and most of them didn’t even remember they had turned them over, and that was that. The longer they hung out with Fred, the less chance they had to smoke.

Another funny thing was, they didn’t remember about smoking for quite a while after leaving Fred’s bedside. Every day these nicotine addicts” smoked less, if at all. By the time Fred left the hospital, five out of seven of his closest friends had accidentally become nonsmokers. Even the remaining two cut down their smoking by half.

Want to quit smoking? Maybe you don’t have a sick friend in the hospital with a clever
wife. That’s okay. Here’s the trick: Spend time with nonsmokers.

You’ve probably heard that if your close friends are wealthy, you’re likely to be wealthy too, even if you weren’t to begin with. Same thing. You lie down with dogs, you wake up with fleas. You hang out with smokers, you smoke when they do. You hang out with nonsmokers, you don’t smoke too much. You don’t want to sneak out for a smoke because you might miss the next joke or juicy piece of gossip, because your non-smoking aren’t going to hold the punch line till you get back. Or save you that last piece of pie. So you find yourself forgoing that cigarette. And the next. And the next. And pretty soon, you may not smoke at all. When you have completed your self hypnosis session you will begin up the stairs counting backwards from the tenth stair. As you climb the stairs tell yourself you are coming up from hypnosis and will awake with a feeling of wellness. Once you have made your way up the staircase then tell yourself to open your eyes and return to the normal awake state.

I was chatting with Fred Greene of Golf Smarter the other day and was aware of how often we broke into laughter during the course of our conversation. There are many things which made us laugh, and I am only too aware that my jaw got a great work out!

Both of us are passionate about golf, and both of us have found our way to forming a marriage between our passion and our employment. Golf makes me smile a lot and I can tell that it does the same for Fred.

There are many aspects of golf which I dearly love. It is a friendly game and a wonderful way in which to meet new people. My home is in the Isle of Man; although I’m lucky enough to spend a fair amount of time in California (even though it’s quite a commute!). It was a gentleman (an avid golfer) who lives in Edinburgh, Scotland, who put me in touch with Fred who also lives in California. There are very few games which put people together from all over the world in such an easy and comfortable manner.

Part of what leads to that ease of getting to know someone is the shared passion for the game whilst another part is the amount of time it takes to play a round of golf together with the gentle pace of the game. A further aspect is the fact that you can be almost any age or fitness level and still be able to play golf. And then of course your level of accomplishment doesn’t affect the play of the other people who you are playing with. Golf is pretty much unique in this combination of facts.

Cricket is another game which affords plenty of time to get to know a fellow spectator, as a gentleman pointed out the other day. It provides a great “networking opportunity” as you bond over your shared passion. But you can’t play cricket on your own and your level of ability will affect the overall game. Tennis requires too much energy to leave much time for pleasantries and you again cannot play alone. Can you think of any sport which provides the same opportunities to “connect” that golf does?

Aside from the friends you can make through golf, there are many other things which make it a very special game. I have already mentioned that you can play it alone or with others and level of ability doesn’t cause issues. A far greater thing however is what golf teaches you as a person.

I played yesterday with a friend who passed comment on how much her temperament had altered since she had started to play golf, both on and off the course. She is now a more placid and person; she was always determined. Golf teaches you the mental skills which are necessary in life in general because it provides you with immediate and dramatic feedback upon your thoughts and actions. As you learn to control your emotions and direct your focus more appropriately, these skills can then be put to good use in every other area of your life.

Cause and effect are seen very clearly in golf, as your thoughts control your arms and then the club and ultimately the ball. The impact of your thoughts are therefore illuminated; you can see very clearly what needs a little work or practice. As your control of the golf ball increases, you inevitably grow as a person.

How do you go about helping someone else to do something which they deep down aren’t sure that they want to do and they firmly believe that it will be difficult? Most smokers who are contemplating stopping look upon this task about as favorably as having their leg chopped off; they dread it.

Smokers worry about putting on weight, getting ratty and frustrated and wonder how on earth they are going to cope. Now, if you are the person who is their close partner, the person who loves them, it’s quite likely that you would want them to stop smoking. You’ve read all of the literature about what smoking does to your health, the increased chance of cancer, heart disease and early demise, and you just don’t want any of that to happen to them.

How does this make you feel? If you are a smoker too, you are in a similar boat and you can appreciate the ambivalent feelings one experiences about quitting smoking. But you also have to know that no matter how much you encourage them to stop, or set an example and stop first, or try to make a pact to stop smoking together, you have to realize that they have to WANT to stop too. If you smoke as well, or have smoked in the past, they will at least feel that you understand what is going on in their mind.

If, on the other hand you are a non-smoker, they will not think that you understand at all. They almost see you as the “enemy”; one of those people out there who keep telling you what you should and shouldn’t do. How can you help the person you love to stop smoking when they act as if you are on the opposite side of a line firing at them? The answer is quite simple – don’t fire at them. Stop telling them what to do. They will do it when they are ready.

I was chatting with a friend who was in just this situation. His fiance had said that she wanted to stop smoking and was going to finally quit after 20 years. He had smoked when he was younger but only for a year before his interest in sport made him stop as he needed to have the benefit of 100% lung capacity, unimpeded by chemical inhalation. He hates the smell of smoke but most of all he wanted his fiance to be healthy and well.

He hadn’t TOLD her to stop, but he had made it very clear that he would LIKE her to stop. Well, that’s what he thought! She didn’t FEEL that it was like that – her logical mind knew that he hadn’t issued an ultimatum, but she still FELT that he was “firing at her” in many of the comments that he made. He thought he was helping when he made a point of expressing disgust at cigarette smells and so on. But every one of those little comments, which he meant to be encouraging, was triggering an ever increasing defensive reaction in her.

And what happens when you feel super defensive? You snap and fire back – she started sneaking out of the back door and smoking again. And so the question remains about what he could have done to help which was more effective? What she needed was to feel that he was on her side, not the enemy.

How could he go about this? What he started to do was to completely stop commenting about smoking at all. No more comments; no more making her know that he knew she was sneaking out of the back door trying to hide a quick cigarette. Yes, he knew she was doing that, but he started to pretend that he didn’t know. Instead, he gave her loads of hugs and cuddles and told her how thankful he was that she was trying so hard to stop…that she had done so well in stopping smoking.

Can you see the difference? He was making her feel good. He was subtlety rewarding her and reinforcing the times she went without cigarettes. He was making her see that he was really happy with her, which also made it harder for her to “let him down”. He wasn’t telling her what to do – he wasn’t firing at her; he was her friend and lover. And she stopped sneaking out to grab a quick cigarette.

The only way in which you can help someone to stop smoking is to make them feel that you are with them; that you are on their side. You can encourage them to see and feel the benefits in quitting, and this makes it easier for them. Punishing them for smoking and expressing disgust doesn’t work.
