Hypnosis refers to a state of concentrated relaxation. It enables a person to relax, and focuses on a certain issue or preferred result. It is to be understood here that hypnosis is different form normal relaxation or sleep. Typically a session of hypnosis helps you to relax your mind as well as your body, and thereby connect to your subconscious mind. As it is, the conscious mind continuously edits as well as judges your thoughts, feelings or inputs. On the other hand, the subconscious mind is actually like a sponge, which absorb every thought or feeling that comes in. Unlike what most people believe, hypnotism or hypnosis largely differs from a state of deep sleep, and both of them are two different conditions.
As it is, no one can exactly predict the exact date, in regard to the evolution of hypnosis; it has its roots in several cultures across the world in various forms or the other. In modern times however, it is James Braid, who is largely credited with popularizing the concept. The term hypnosis began to be used widely during the 1880s, primarily due to significant work in this regard. Hypnosis and its several branches, such as mesmerism and magnetism were used in various medical practices. As a matter of fact, before the invention of chloroform, hypnosis was the only known way of conducting a pain less surgery.
When we discuss the history of hypnosis, the most important name in regard to those who used hypnosis for surgery is that of James Esdaile. Dr Esdaile was born in 1808 in Montrose, Scotland, and is a major name in the field of hypnosis. It was during his stay in Calcutta, India that he successfully practiced hypnosis. Within a short period, Esdaile gained immense popularity and was widely acclaimed for his unconventional methods. The painless surgery, particularly in cases of scrotal tumors, became part of folklore in the European as well as indigenous communities. Scrotal tumors were widespread in Bengal during that time, primarily as a result of filariasis, which used to be transmitted by mosquitoes. In most of the cases, surgery was the only option, which was very painful. Dr. Esdaile's procedure helped in providing painless surgical treatment to those suffering from this condition.
This was followed by several experimentation and researches and today, hypnosis plays a vital role in the field of psychiatric treatment, child birth and various other medical conditions.
