Commitment or will-power really is the ingredient which is more frequently missing in the mind sets of people who want to lose weight. How often do you hear overweight people bemoaning the fact that they haven’t got the will power to say no, or that they just cannot change their lifestyle?

Lose weight easily. Anyone who feels fat and flabby yearns for an easy weight loss solution. And actually the very acknowledgment that you are fat may indeed be the key which unlocks the door to weight loss.
People don’t like to be called fat. There is a definite stigma attached to being called fat. Somehow we have learned as a society that we should remove the label “fat” from our day to day vocabulary. We have been trained to know that it is OK to be called “obese” but not to be called “fat”. But does this ultimately help us to lose weight, or does it in fact provide a mental barrier to weight loss?
What I mean is that the word obese or obesity conjures up the concept of a medical condition, one which you cannot control but rather you are subjected to; it follows that the word obesity implies that it’s not your fault, and that you can do nothing about your excess weight. The obesity label can in fact make you feel even more out of control of your eating habits than you were before, thereby making you feel that you just cannot lose weight, that you haven’t got the power to lose weight. You feel helpless.
Fat, on the other hand, is just fat. The “fat” word implies that it is your fault, your eating habits which are to blame. Thus this is why I mentioned before that to acknowledge that you are fat may just be the thing which motivates you to start losing weight. You no longer feel that you are subjected to a disease which you can do nothing about; rather you are admitting to yourself that you have the power to control your eating habits and your weight. By acknowledging that you are fat as opposed to obese you empower yourself to take control and set about losing weight.
The fat versus obesity distinction is similar to that between having a cold and suffering from the flu. How often do you hear someone say that they have the flu when in fact all they have is the common cold? Why do so many of us prefer to feel helpless and powerless instead of feeling in control? Why do we prefer to suffer from something dramatic instead of something common and mundane?
I suspect that there are a few reasons. Perhaps we don’t want to take responsibility for how we are; we don’t like to feel that we are at fault or have caused our own issues, be they being over-weight or having caught a cold. Perhaps we choose to seek the easiest solution than to have to work at something; it’s easier to go to the doctor and take a pill (be it diet pill or anti-biotic) than it is to exert our own effort in getting better or losing weight. Or maybe we just follow the crowd and use these terms of obesity or flu because that’s what we are used to hearing, and we do not really think about their hidden implications.
Whatever the underlying reasons are, fat is fat. I have to second what our UK minister of public health was quoted as saying in a recent edition of the Sunday Times. Anne Milton said that calling people fat instead of obese was more likely to motivate them to lose weight.
Yes, some people do suffer from a medical condition which results in obesity and prevents them from losing weight. But I am sure that this does not apply to all of the nearly 25% of adults and 14% of children in the UK who are labeled “obese”.
If you want to lose weight then it does help to acknowledge to yourself that you are fat. When you feel fat and flabby and acknowledge that this weighty issue is due to your own eating habits and lifestyle choices as opposed to a metabolic issue or disease you then realize that you can do something about it. You can take control and adjust your eating so as to lose weight, be it in terms of eating different types of food, choosing smaller portions or exercising so as to burn calories more quickly. The first step to losing weight easily lies in getting your mind around the matter.

NINETY percent of golf is in the mind. If you feel confident when you swing the club, the ball is much more likely to respond as desired. If you choose an EXACT target for your shot, the ball is much more likely to travel in that direction. If you visualize the trajectory of your shot, again the ball is much more likely to fly in a similar way, and so on.
On the flip side, if you don’t choose an exact target, how can your mind direct your body to swing the golf club so the ball travels in the right direction? If you don’t decide in your mind where the ball is going, how can you impart the correct information to the ball at impact with the clubface? If you are thinking “I don’t like this club” how relaxed and confident is your golf swing going to be?
I know what you’re going to say now. “But I don’t feel confident with that club” or some variation of “this is how I am”. And if that’s how you’re thinking, nothing will change. It’s a bit of a chicken and egg situation. You have to feel confident in order to hit the ball well; and you have to hit the ball well in order to feel confident. Or do you?
What causes a lack of confidence? Is it a fear that the ball is not going where you want it to go, or a fear of making a fool of yourself, or a fear that your swing needs to be fixed? We’re not born with fear. Fear is learned…and therefore can be unlearned. The question is “how?”
First, stop thinking that your golf swing needs to be fixed; it’s just fine. Just look at all the professionals on TV and you won’t see two same swings. If you topped the ball on the last shot, you topped it. If you hit it fat, you got under it too much. These are relevant facts which provide feedback to you which enable you to adjust your next swing accordingly. Your entire swing doesn’t need fixing.
Secondly, having emptied your mind of irrelevant “swing needs to be fixed” thoughts, you can use your mind to create a feeling of confidence. Think confident thoughts and you’ll feel confident. Everything in life starts with a thought. Thoughts create your emotions which direct your actions. Just by consciously choosing to direct your thoughts in this way you will reap great rewards. However, if you really want to appreciate the full power of your mind in golf, hypnosis is the way to go.

People who are afraid or phobic about operations would do anything to overcome their feelings of dread and trepidation; and these individuals often seek the services of a hypnotherapist through sheer desperation. Most are unaware of what hypnosis really is; rather, they are just trying hypnotherapy as a last resort…and they are usually pleasantly amazed at how great they feel after their session.
Unfortunately, most people who are preparing for an operation have no idea of the many ways in which hypnosis can be of very great assistance. Even though the medical profession are providing much research evidence which proves the effectiveness of hypnosis in surgery (reducing anxiety, reducing the need for pain control medication, speeding up recovering time, and so on) there are still many people, medical professionals and patients alike, who are not sufficiently aware of the real benefits of this natural opiate.
Professionals sometimes argue that it’s just a placebo; that it’s all in the mind. But from the patient’s perspective, who cares? So long as it works. There’s a high placebo factor in the taking of pills, but not so many people think about that! As it happens, recent research indicates that in hypnosis a different area of the brain is activated to that seen in the placebo effect. But, from you, the prospective patient’s perspective, all that matters is that your surgery is as comfortable, successful and pain free as possible. You don’t really give a hoot whether pills, placebo or hypnosis are the key to this! In fact the key is a combination of all three – this is your optimal approach to surgery. I’m not advocating an either-or scenario; Mind and medicine work beautifully TOGETHER. The use of hypnosis is complementary.
Returning to the matter of the placebo effect, both pills and hypnotherapy work best if you know what they are intended to achieve, and you can therefore expect a specific result. A brief look at some medical research findings will give you an idea of what you should expect and get the placebo effect working for you.
Hypnosis can be put to work in preparation for your operation, during the operation and also in the recovery stage. I have already mentioned it’s effectiveness in overcoming fears and phobias, which may relate to the hospital, the operation, needles, blood, claustrophobia or even to medical personnel. As I stated before, your expectations have a great impact on your actual experience, and so it is important to prepare well for your operation.
Whether you admit it to yourself or not, everyone feels a certain level of anxiety about a surgical procedure, and this anxiety changes your body’s rhythm, potentially making surgery less straightforward. Hypnosis can be used to relax, so your blood pressure remains normal and your heart beat slows down; as you relax you are able to listen better to your doctor or advisor and make more logical and rational decisions. Hypnosis can be used to visualize the optimal outcome. At the end of the day, a relaxed patient is a better patient and surgery will proceed more smoothly. (Dreher, 1998; Kessler, 1999; Levitan, 1992; Pinnel, 2000).
You may very well ask how on earth hypnosis can be of assistance when you are actually in the operating theatre, and are completely “out”, compliments of your anesthetic. Some of you may be aware of the phenomenon of anesthesia awareness, whereby some portion of mental functioning remains active even though you can clearly feel no pain. (Wilson 1969). Hypnotic suggestion can not only be given before the operation (with their effect takes place during the operation) but, because of anesthesia awareness, hypnotic suggestion can also be very useful during the operation itself. (Adams, 1992; Blankfield, 1996; Lang, 2000)
Hypnotherapy can be effective in pain control (Barber, 1996), accelerating tissue repair (Holden-Lund, 1988) and in increasing recovery time post operation. In fact, one research study showed that hypnotic suggestion resulted in patients reducing their time in their hospital beds to the average value of $1200 per patient! (Disbrow, Bennet and Owings, 1993)
As you can see, hypnosis can be an invaluable tool, allowing you to take control of your operative experience and achieve the most successful and comfortable outcome. In fact, in a meta-analysis on the effectiveness of adjunctive hypnosis in surgical patients (Montgomery GH, David D, Winkel G, Silverstein JH, Bovbjerg DH. Anesth Analg 2002 Jun;94(6):1639-45) it was seen that surgical patients receiving hypnotherapy had better outcomes than 89% of controls. EIGHTY NINE PERCENT! Not only that, this research also showed that the method of hypnotic induction, either live or via audio-tape, showed no significant difference.

There are many times when you hear someone say “sleep on it; you’ll feel better in the morning”. And almost always this is exactly what transpires. You do feel better after a night’s sleep. Why is this?
The answer to this is multi-faceted. The most obvious is that when you are rested you do tend to feel more relaxed and more optimistic. And then of course we are all aware of the benefits associated with taking a step back; you can regroup and gather your thoughts together as you take this moment away from the “thick of things”. There are a lot of myths about hypnosis, many of which instill great and unnecessary fear in one who could otherwise benefit greatly from its therapeutic potential. These fallacies range from a fear of being left in a hypnotic trance for days on end, to thinking that only those who are weak willed could be hypnotized, to an erroneous assumption that hypnotherapists are simply quacks.
For many people these assumptions and fears actually stop them in their tracks. They would not even consider using hypnosis because, well, it’s quackery! This can be an assumption that is so much embedded in ones belief system that they do not get past go and gather information on the subject; Information and research that would undoubtedly change their minds.
We do this with many things in life. We make snap or instant decisions in the blink of an eye without even knowing upon what basis our subconscious minds came to those conclusions.
My mom was discussing yesterday why she has “always liked anchovies”. Apparently anchovy sauce was a favorite of her grandfathers and so it was cooked a lot when she was growing up and thus she was introduced to it positively and frequently at a young age. She just cannot understand why anyone wouldn’t like anchovy sauce! Now, I’m sure we can all relate to these types of scenarios. When something is familiar to us, we take it as given that it is normal.
It is not just taste preferences and behaviors that we assimilate in such an easy and unconscious manner. Attitudes and beliefs also sneak stealthily into our subconscious minds. Most often, we do not even know where such beliefs have sprung from, until you start to question them, of course.
This is how my mom came to work out why she loves anchovies so much whilst I have to admit to disliking them intensely! We don’t often ask ourselves why we do things or why we think things. We just “do”. We just “think”. It’s just “how it is” for us.
Sadly, hypnosis frequently falls into this abyss of unintentional conditioning. It is only once one does start to question why they hold such beliefs, and proceed to undertake a little research that they are able to open their minds to the many benefits which hypnotherapy offers.
Medical research from all over the World has proven time and again the efficacy of hypnosis in a myriad of arenas. Please don’t take my word for it. I am biased, as I am in fact a hypnotherapist. But I do empathize with those who hold these negative and erroneous assumptions about hypnosis because I too once thought these same thoughts.
Once you start to investigate the subject of hypnosis you cannot be anything other than blown away by the evidence of its normality, ease of use, and effectiveness. Research in fact abounds upon the subject of hypnosis. I don’t mean any old semi-research. I mean full-blown research projects carried out by very bright, very well qualified people.
Think Stanford, Harvard, UCLA et al. As I said before, don’t just trust me. Look it up for yourself and you will find ample proof that hypnotherapy is anything but quackery. There is one slight proviso. A well qualified and experienced hypnotherapist is not a quack.

Helping Someone Else To Stop Smoking by Roseanna Leaton
How do you go about helping someone else to do something which they deep down aren’t sure that they want to do and they firmly believe that it will be difficult? Most smokers who are contemplating stopping look upon this task about as favorably as having their leg chopped off; they dread it.
Smokers worry about putting on weight, getting ratty and frustrated and wonder how on earth they are going to cope. Now, if you are the person who is their close partner, the person who loves them, it’s quite likely that you would want them to stop smoking. You’ve read all of the literature about what smoking does to your health, the increased chance of cancer, heart disease and early demise, and you just don’t want any of that to happen to them.
How does this make you feel? If you are a smoker too, you are in a similar boat and you can appreciate the ambivalent feelings one experiences about quitting smoking. But you also have to know that no matter how much you encourage them to stop, or set an example and stop first, or try to make a pact to stop smoking together, you have to realize that they have to WANT to stop too. If you smoke as well, or have smoked in the past, they will at least feel that you understand what is going on in their mind.
If, on the other hand you are a non-smoker, they will not think that you understand at all. They almost see you as the “enemy”; one of those people out there who keep telling you what you should and shouldn’t do. How can you help the person you love to stop smoking when they act as if you are on the opposite side of a line firing at them? The answer is quite simple – don’t fire at them. Stop telling them what to do. They will do it when they are ready.
I was chatting with a friend who was in just this situation. His fiance had said that she wanted to stop smoking and was going to finally quit after 20 years. He had smoked when he was younger but only for a year before his interest in sport made him stop as he needed to have the benefit of 100% lung capacity, unimpeded by chemical inhalation. He hates the smell of smoke but most of all he wanted his fiance to be healthy and well.
He hadn’t TOLD her to stop, but he had made it very clear that he would LIKE her to stop. Well, that’s what he thought! She didn’t FEEL that it was like that – her logical mind knew that he hadn’t issued an ultimatum, but she still FELT that he was “firing at her” in many of the comments that he made. He thought he was helping when he made a point of expressing disgust at cigarette smells and so on. But every one of those little comments, which he meant to be encouraging, was triggering an ever increasing defensive reaction in her.
And what happens when you feel super defensive? You snap and fire back – she started sneaking out of the back door and smoking again. And so the question remains about what he could have done to help which was more effective? What she needed was to feel that he was on her side, not the enemy.
How could he go about this? What he started to do was to completely stop commenting about smoking at all. No more comments; no more making her know that he knew she was sneaking out of the back door trying to hide a quick cigarette. Yes, he knew she was doing that, but he started to pretend that he didn’t know. Instead, he gave her loads of hugs and cuddles and told her how thankful he was that she was trying so hard to stop…that she had done so well in stopping smoking.
Can you see the difference? He was making her feel good. He was subtlety rewarding her and reinforcing the times she went without cigarettes. He was making her see that he was really happy with her, which also made it harder for her to “let him down”. He wasn’t telling her what to do – he wasn’t firing at her; he was her friend and lover. And she stopped sneaking out to grab a quick cigarette.
The only way in which you can help someone to stop smoking is to make them feel that you are with them; that you are on their side. You can encourage them to see and feel the benefits in quitting, and this makes it easier for them. Punishing them for smoking and expressing disgust doesn’t work.

What gives you faith in a product that you are purchasing? Is it about the presentation for you, or perhaps you prefer to have a recommendation so that you are assured of the quality by someone else? For me, a product has to be accessible and it has to do or provide the service that I require of it. I remember when my dad was boasting about a satellite navigation system which he had purchased on eBay for a very cheap price. You want to lose weight. You need to eat and you should enjoy eating, so why feel guilty? What does guilt achieve anyway? It’s not as if the guilty feelings have prevented you from eating; guilt is only experienced whilst actually eating food or after eating. Guilt achieves nothing other than making you feel bad about eating.
And surely eating something gorgeously delicious should make you feel good, not bad? After all, you eat for nourishment and when you are feeling well nourished you feel good. Enjoying good food is part of enjoying life. It should satisfy your taste buds as well as your need for nutrition.
I have heard many people comment upon how unfair it is that so many thin people seem to be able to eat food which is laden in fatty calories and yet still stay thin, whilst they themselves manage to put on weight simply by looking at a plate of lettuce leaves! But is this really the case? Can you really eat any diet which you choose without thinking about calories and still stay slim?
Yes, individuals are subject to their own metabolic differences, which are also related to the amount and types of exercise which they partake in. But metabolism is not the only reason why some people put on weight whilst others do not.
Let’s examine for a moment the habits and thought processes of those people who seem to eat whatever they want without gaining weight. You will usually find that they eat relatively slowly, and savor the taste of the food which they are eating. You will also notice that they do not tend to overeat; once satisfied they stop eating. They do not suffer pangs of guilt and neither do they think that they should not eat particular types or amounts of food. Their minds are not tied up or restricted by a diet mentality.
If you consider the people who complain of putting on weight at the mere sight of food, you will usually notice that they are preoccupied with thoughts about food and ideas about what they should or should not have. They constantly feel guilty and so cannot fully enjoy the food which they should be enjoying. And herein lies one of the key issues; if you do not allow yourself to enjoy the food which you are eating, you will not feel satisfied, because satisfaction is not merely based on nutritional value alone.
To feel fully satisfied with your meals you need to savor the taste, smell and texture of the food which you are eating. You need to enjoy it and there is also evidence to support the requirement of a range of tastes within your meals. Thus if you limit yourself to a boring diet you will not feel satisfied, and if you do not allow yourself to enjoy your food, you will not feel satisfied.
And we all know what happens when you do not feel satisfied; you reach for more and more and more. Ironically, even whilst you reach for more food, because you are feeling guilty and not fully enjoying it, you do not fully appreciate what you are eating and it is easy to kid yourself into thinking that you are not actually eating very much. Your vision becomes distorted. And needless to say, until you fully recognize what is happening you are not in a position to do anything about it.
To lose weight successfully you have to get back to enjoying your food without feeling guilty, and to do this requires you to learn to think in a different way. This is why hypnosis presents us with such a successful approach to effective weight loss.

It is ever so easy to get into a rut. We humans are creatures of habit and we tend in the main to stick to patterns of behavior which have grown familiar to us. We tend to keep on repeating the same patterns even when we know that they are not working for us. In fact, it is often the case that the more we know we need to get out, the deeper the rut we inadvertently dig for ourselves.
This is especially true when we are experiencing stress. We just keep on doing the same things again and again in the vain hope that the results will somehow miraculously change. It is easy for an observer to question why you do not simply change what you are doing or the way in which you are doing it; but somehow you don’t quite think about this yourself.
There is actually a very good reason for this apparently rather “stupid” behavioral tendency. When under stress, the logical reasoning part of the brain which is found in the higher cortex can sometimes be bypassed; the result is an inability to think logically and clearly. Stress can in this way make us “stupid”. Stress is a threat and this is a trigger to the primitive brain to take action; the action sought will be the most familiar reaction to us, hence keeping doing what you have been doing.
I overheard someone saying that “the difference between a rut and a grave is just the dimensions” and this is indeed a very true statement. When one is feeling stressed, an awful lot of pressure is put upon one’s physiology. Everything speeds up and tightens up; your heart beats faster, your pulse begins to race, your blood pressure becomes higher and so on. If you do not learn to stop this cycle, the rut you are digging may indeed become your grave.
The way in which to get out of a stress induced rut is actually a lot simpler than one might think. Just by stopping doing what you were doing you relieve some of the pressure. You get away from the panic caused by knowing that whatever you are doing isn’t working. When you know something isn’t working you tend to try harder and harder to make it work, rapidly building the pressure you are feeling and becoming ever more stressed. If this has been happening to you, just stop; stop doing what you have been doing.
Now let’s think about climbing out of that rut. We need to make sure that your logical and reasoning mind is fully engaged and to do this you need to relax. Just by learning to use self hypnosis you can relax at will and ensure that all areas of your brain are working on full power instead of firing off a single cylinder, so to speak. Hypnosis, thanks to television shows and movies, the very word conjures up the depiction of a hawk-eyed hypnotherapist swinging a watch repeating, “You are getting sleepy.”
Do an MSN search, and you will find several million web pages focused on the subject, especially weight loss hypnosis. Unfortunately, many websites that sell self-hypnosis CD’s for weight loss make ridiculous claims. Since 1978, I’ve been in professional practice. So I think that I’m knowledgeable enough to set the record straight on weight loss hypnosis.
First of all, posthypnotic suggestion is a tool, just like a scalpel is a tool. Just as diversified surgeons have different skill levels in the use of a scalpel, remarkable hypnotists have diversified skill levels in the use of self-hypnosis for weight loss. And to complicate the matter, there are many remarkable forms and types of hypnosis.
Listen to a couple of the wild assertions about weight loss hypnosis that I’ve seen on websites, along with the truth of the matter:
“Hypnosis for weight loss will speed up your metabolism.” The fact of the matter is that weight loss hypnosis won’t speed up your metabolism. But it can be very feasible at helping to program your unconscious with increased motivation to exercise, and that exercise will increase your metabolism. Similarly, suggestibility to speed up the metabolism for quick weight loss can be effected by programming the unconscious to motivate the intake of increased amounts of protein, because that intake will step up the metabolic rate.
Hypnotic suggestion will make you lose weight. This is false. But weight loss hypnosis can be used to help eliminate your appetite, so that you eat less, and eating less can help you to get rid of weight.
Your appetite is triggered by two unconscious programs:
A. When you pair eating with any other behavior, the other behavior will trigger cravings for food and a strong desire to eat. This is called a conditioned response. For example, if you eat while you drive, you will automatically get an urge to eat each time you drive your car.
B. When you feel tense, you feel a strong urge to put food into your mouth for relaxation. This is the result of programming that you received as an infant. When you got crabby, your mom put a bottle in your mouth. You got distracted, relaxed, and probably fell asleep. Now when you get cranky (anxious or tense), you feel compelled to put something into your mouth for relaxation and pleasure.
C. There is a third subconscious program that is present for some people. It’s called emotional eating. Emotional eating takes place when a person is motivated to make him or herself fat, because by being fat they will protect themselves in some way.
For example, if an individual got their heart broken in a relationship, their unconscious can usually force them into an action that would prevent them from getting their heart broken again. Example: They are motivated to get fat to keep them out of another relationship, because that will abandon the possibility of another broken heart.
D. I have written several articles on hypnosis for weight loss and emotional eating that are available on my website. There are some effective and powerful ways to use hypnotic suggestion to wipe out emotional eating. So just how can weight loss hypnotism fix the above problems? Let’s cover them one at a time.
In paragraph “A” above: Conditioned responses can be “extinguished” easily and immediately using a scheme that I call the “Flash.” The flash programs the mind to setup a new set of responses. In the above example, the subject had unconsciously interlinked the picture of food in the hand, with the TV. Each time he / she sat down to watch the TV, the unconscious mind filled in the missing part of the picture: It “Flashed” the image of the food in the hand, and the subject felt a urge, and an urge to eat.
The Flash is a system that helps us program the unconscious to use the impression of the TV as a trigger for a visualization of yourself watching TV without eating. When we lose the picture of the food, we lose the cravings.
When we momentarily disassociate (see ourselves from the point of view that another individual would), we are not able to sense our feelings (cravings and urges).
When we see ourselves in an action (watching TV without eating), we feel a strong urge to generate that behavior. So the subject loses the cravings, and actually gets a compulsion to reject food.
In paragraph “B” above: The subject is eating and drinking for relaxation and pleasure. We teach the subject self-hypnosis for weight loss, because the very essence of the hypnotic state is deep relaxation.
And we utilize the “Flash” to program the subconscious to use the thoughts that are triggering feelings of nervous strain and annoyance, as triggers for secondary thoughts that will trigger the relaxation response instead. When the subject feels more relaxed overall, oral compulsions are drastically reduced.
In paragraph “C” above: We discussed compulsive eating which makes the person overweight. The “behavior” of being overweight then provides some sort of emotional protection. So we use a technique called an NLP Six-Step Reframe for weight loss, which programs the subconscious to take the responsibility for making the subject automatically substitute some other more acceptable behavior that will provide the same emotional protection, in place of being overweight. And that reframe will abandon the craving to eat for emotional purposes.

Living Without Regrets by Roseanna Leaton
I always think of the song “Non Je ne regrette rien”, which Edith Piaf was famous for singing, whenever I visit Paris. It is of course a French song, and well known, so that easily explains why it popped into my head whilst sitting in the airplane en route to Paris.
Its words prompted me to ask the question of how to live one’s life without regrets. What are the key parameters or guidelines which are needed so as to live life to the full and to regret little? Perhaps one way in which we might begin an examination of this topic is to first identify the sorts of things which we might regret.
We might regret not having spoken up and said what we were thinking, or perhaps not told somebody we loved them more often. We might regret not having “been there” to help and to care more frequently or more consistently. In either of these wishes it in unlikely that we would regret the opposite. We might well regret having hurt someone but would rejoice at having acted in a manner which made another person happy.
In relation to work, we might regret not having worked in a different way, or worked longer hours or fewer hours. We might regret that we missed opportunities to travel or opportunities to learn. Few of us ever feel that we travelled too much, learned too much or saw too much. We might regret that we did not approach life with more of a sense of balance.
I’m sure I could go on and on with these types of examples, but to me there is a common theme which can be pulled out from these examples; the most important things in life are to be thoughtful and caring to others, to do a good turn if you can but not to do a bad one. Alongside this it is important to learn and to grow and to grasp opportunities as and when they arise; we therefore need to possess the requisite levels of self-confidence so as to feel able to go for it.
This is why you often hear the phrase that the greatest gift you can give to your kids is confidence. With confidence the world is your oyster and you are less likely to live with regrets. In fact, confidence is also the greatest gift you can give to yourself.
Perhaps that sounds to be a strange concept to you? Perhaps you think that you cannot do anything to build your confidence? But you can build your own confidence, and it is an easier process than you might have expected.

There are a lot of myths about hypnosis, many of which instill great and unnecessary fear in one who could otherwise benefit greatly from its therapeutic potential. These fallacies range from a fear of being left in a hypnotic trance for days on end, to thinking that only those who are weak willed could be hypnotized, to an erroneous assumption that hypnotherapists are simply quacks.
For many people these assumptions and fears actually stop them in their tracks. They would not even consider using hypnosis because, well, it’s quackery! This can be an assumption that is so much embedded in ones belief system that they do not get past go and gather information on the subject; Information and research that would undoubtedly change their minds.
We do this with many things in life. We make snap or instant decisions in the blink of an eye without even knowing upon what basis our subconscious minds came to those conclusions.
My mom was discussing yesterday why she has “always liked anchovies”. Apparently anchovy sauce was a favorite of her grandfathers and so it was cooked a lot when she was growing up and thus she was introduced to it positively and frequently at a young age. She just cannot understand why anyone wouldn’t like anchovy sauce! Now, I’m sure we can all relate to these types of scenarios. When something is familiar to us, we take it as given that it is normal.
It is not just taste preferences and behaviors that we assimilate in such an easy and unconscious manner. Attitudes and beliefs also sneak stealthily into our subconscious minds. Most often, we do not even know where such beliefs have sprung from, until you start to question them, of course.
This is how my mom came to work out why she loves anchovies so much whilst I have to admit to disliking them intensely! We don’t often ask ourselves why we do things or why we think things. We just “do”. We just “think”. It’s just “how it is” for us.
Sadly, hypnosis frequently falls into this abyss of unintentional conditioning. It is only once one does start to question why they hold such beliefs, and proceed to undertake a little research that they are able to open their minds to the many benefits which hypnotherapy offers.
Medical research from all over the World has proven time and again the efficacy of hypnosis in a myriad of arenas. Please don’t take my word for it. I am biased, as I am in fact a hypnotherapist. But I do empathize with those who hold these negative and erroneous assumptions about hypnosis because I too once thought these same thoughts.
Once you start to investigate the subject of hypnosis you cannot be anything other than blown away by the evidence of its normality, ease of use, and effectiveness. Research in fact abounds upon the subject of hypnosis. I don’t mean any old semi-research. I mean full-blown research projects carried out by very bright, very well qualified people.
Think Stanford, Harvard, UCLA et al. As I said before, don’t just trust me. Look it up for yourself and you will find ample proof that hypnotherapy is anything but quackery. There is one slight proviso. A well qualified and experienced hypnotherapist is not a quack.
