Plantar warts are a real pain to get rid of. I should know. I spent almost a year undergoing traditional treatments trying to remove them. But nothing worked. So my podiatrist suggested another approach. Without giving me any of the specifics, he literally walked me out the door and up the staircase of the medical building to another doctors office on the 2nd floor.
The sign on the door read "Psychiatrist".
My 20 year-old head was spinning. What the heck was this all about and how much exactly was it going to cost me?
My podiatrist handed me off personally to the new doctor and then left. His office was quite eerie, with him, a pleasant-looking South American man, sitting behind his desk in the dimly-lit room, a soft yellow light on behind him. I nearly bolted out the door.
But, as it turned out, this guy was one fascinating dude. The year was 1978 and this doctor, who regularly used hypnosis in his practice, was about to try it on me. We were actually going to try and cure my plantar warts with nothing more than hypnosis!
I was skeptical to put it mildly, but I did have an open mind. I thought, well, why not try, it might work. And as the doctor explained, there would be no charge. This was to be conducted as a documented case.
We Begin
He first took some photographs of the bottom of my feet. This of course was to document thoroughly the "before" images. When he finished, he then proceeded to "put me under". I cooperated fully. I had no idea just what to expect but my mind was totally open to the notion that this could succeed.
He had me sit on a comfortable couch, in the near-dark, with that damned soft-yellow light on behind his head, and he instructed me to close my eyes and then follow a step-wise relaxation sequence from head to toe. He went very slowly and surely and after about 6 minutes I was completely relaxed. But I was completely conscious of everything going on around me. It wasn't at all what I had expected to feel like when hypnotised.
It was about at this point when suddenly, listening to his smooth, mellow, heavily-accented voice, I felt what I can only describe as being dead. I was completely relaxed, my breathing had slowed down to almost nothing, and I couldn't feel anything at all. It was like I was a ghost.
I jerked up and opened my eyes. I was showing signs of anxiety and he was right there ready for that reaction. He said don't worry about it. It's natural. It's OK. You're fine. Let's begin again.
We spent the remainder of the hour going through the process. He tested me by telling me to imagine that a balloon was tied to my wrist by a string and it was pulling my arm up. It took me about 5 minutes of steadily trying to imagine this and lo and behold my arm began to move. It lifted itself up and rose high above my head.
Once he saw this he then gave me a suggestion. He told me that my left foot was encased in a block of ice and it was freezing cold. I spent another 4 or 5 minutes imagining this until yes, my left foot became very cold indeed. Amazing!
Homework
He told me that I was a very good subject and that he wanted me to go through this exercise 3 times a day for 20 minutes. Do the self-hypnosis, imagine the balloon, when I reacted then imagine the block of ice. Every day for a week and then come back and see him.
I did exactly as instructed but after a week, nothing changed at all. I was disappointed and returned to his office where he took more pictures. He said don't be concerned at all and he put me under again and went through the same procedure. I then left with the same instructions as before. 3 times per day for 20 minutes.
The next week I returned. More pictures but this time some very very small improvement in one area. I was thinking that at this rate it will be another year before I'm cured. Again he put me under, we went through the process and I left with the same instructions.
OMG
About 2 days into the new week I took a look at the bottom of my left foot and I couldn't believe it! Almost half of the warts were completely gone! I was elated. I continued the process the remainder of the week and when I returned to his office I proudly showed him that my foot was now 95% healed. He took more pictures and one week later I was 100% cured.
Before I left his office for the last time he told me that I could apply this to any facet of life. That self-hypnosis was indeed very powerful and that I could use it to help myself in many ways. The mind is indeed full of mystery and wonder.
