Childhood obesity is a medical condition that affects both children and teenagers and is reaching alarming levels in America. What is it and what can be done?

While there are rare genetic medical conditions that can lead to obesity, in most instances it's created by the amount and types of food eaten. Obesity is a condition where an individual has enough excess body fat it becomes detrimental to their health and overall well-being.

But there's also an emotional price to the condition. Being obese can also affect a person's self-esteem and how they're treated and viewed by others. Childhood and youth is a vulnerable and fragile period of time when youngsters are trying to figure out who they are. Adding excess weight to the equation can compound the problems they're facing.

Some Frightening Statistics on Obesity:

Obesity in young people is rising and has developed into a serious health concern. The rate of obesity among children and adolescents has tripled in this country between the start of the 1980's and the year 2000.

In the United States the estimated number of deaths related to obesity is approximately 280,000. One concern about children with excess weight is without intervention they often grow into obese adults. This means they face a greater risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, orthopedic problems and any number of chronic diseases.

Pediatricians are seeing conditions in their young patients today uncommon in previous generations. These include type 2 diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol). Studies have also shown those who suffer from childhood obesity tend to experience more health worries and psychological challenges because of their weight than do their slimmer peers.

We know the school years can be tough on kids who are perceived as different and children who are obese are often the target of name calling and unkind behavior by their classmates which can negatively affect how they view themselves.

Teenagers, who do manage to shed the pounds as they enter adulthood, can still carry the psychological "scars" with them for many years, as they continue to see the "overweight kid" whenever they look in the mirror.

Most children who are overweight or obese get to the condition because they eat more food than they burn off in energy throughout the day. Children who consume foods and beverages high in salt, sugar and fat, as well as processed and fast foods are at the greatest risk of becoming obese.

How to Battle Obesity in Your Children:

Prevention is the best way to keep your child from becoming obese.

Encourage your child to eat healthy and nutritious foods and to get plenty of physical activity. Set a good example by eating nutritious foods yourself. To encourage more exercise, find ways to make it enjoyable for your child to be active. Take part whenever you can on walks together or bike rides. Set up a net in the back yard to play badminton. Play catch in the park. Swim at the local sports facility.

Encourage an environment that is healthy and your child will pick up on your good habits and they'll develop patterns they'll take into their adult years. Take your child shopping and teach them about making healthy food choices. Steer them towards vegetables and fruits and away from potato chips, chocolate bars or soda pop.

As parents it all starts with you.

You're the greatest influence on your child so make sure they're receiving the right message on eating habits. Childhood obesity can be prevented or overcome once you recognize a problem exists and strive to find the appropriate solution to help your child.
