Affirmative statements are meant to be understood and accepted by the rational mind, so that it may trickle down to the creative subconscious mind. Meditative mantras on the other hand are most often purposefully meaningless so that they do not distract the attention of the person, and by their very nature provide an anchor for drifting minds.

To conclude, proper meditation involves the complete cessation of conscious thought to bring about a higher understanding, and may employ mantras for the beginner, may not be required for the advanced practitioner. Hypnosis on the other hand requires active participation of thoughts and images or symbols to be visualized by the user, to affect a particular state of mind with a specific targeted goal such as getting free of debt, losing weight, giving up smoking etc. The repetitive action phrases are in no way similar to mantras.

In this article I will give you an understanding of how the Elman induction works. Lets start with the induction:

“Take a deep breath in and hold it for a few seconds.” (If your client closes his eyes you should stop the induction and restart it because your client has exactly to do the things you want him to do.)

Allow your mind to close your eyes while you are breathing out and relax every muscle you can feel in your body. Allow your whole body to relax as much as possible, right now.

Now you can concentrate your attention on the small muscles around your eyes and relax them so much that they can’t move anymore.

While you are totally relaxed you can find out that you can’t open your eyelids anymore. Try to test them. They can’t move!”

Now there are 3 possible situations: — The client can’t open his eyelids and you can continue with the induction – If the client opens his eyelids you can say: “Well done, you have proved that you can open your eyes. You have proved that you have the full control over your body. You open your eyes every day. Now you can prove me that you can relax your eyes so much that they stay closed. — If the client doesn’t test his eyelids you should repeat this step.

“Maybe this relaxation can spread your whole body. Make sure that your whole body is totally relaxed. From your head to the tips of your toes.

I don’t know if you already noticed that this relaxation can become deeper and deeper. In a moment I will command you to open and to your eyes immediately.

Opening your eyes can relax your body even more and more. If you close your eyes you can sink 10 times deeper in relaxation.

Open your eyes now, close them again and feel how deep your relaxation can be. Maybe you can imagine how falling in a deeper state of trance could feel like.

In a moment I will tell you to open and close your eyes again and you know that you easily can double the relaxation if you close your eyes.

Well done. Now relax every single muscle in your body.”

This technique is called fractionation. Repeat it a few times to deepen your clients state of trance.

“Now I will lift up your right hand and let it fall.This hand will be so relaxed that it will simply fall down. But don’t try to help me! You have to stay totally passive and let me do the lifting.

When your hand falls down you will immediately sink ten times deeper into trance. (lift the hand up)

While your hand falls down you can allow your body to sink deeper into trance.”

Now your client is in a very deep trance and you can start giving your positive suggestions until you end the trance with the suggestions to be fully awake and aware. With this rapid induction you can achieve somnambulism in under 4 minutes and get the best results.

How Brain Waves Relate to States of Consciousness, Relaxation, Subconsciousness & Sleep

The human brain produces electrical activity that can be measured as brain waves. An electroencephalogram (EEG) measures brain waves in frequencies also known as cycles per second or hertz. Basically, we experience four different brain wave states and each brain wave is related to a different mental state: the everyday conscious state (Beta brain waves), the light and relaxed hypnotic state (Alpha), a very focused meditative state/deep hypnosis (Theta) or sleeping (Delta).

Beta Brain Waves: 14-30 Hz

When you are awake your brain typically operates in a beta state corresponding to 14-30 hertz. Beta is the state of normal wakefulness so when your brain is producing beta brain waves, you are alert and wide awake and your conscious mind is dominant. Beta state is where hypnosis subject’s brain waves would register during the initial consultation and into the beginning of the hypnosis session.

Alpha Brain Waves: 8-13 Hz

Once a person closes his or her eyes, becomes relaxed, or starts daydreaming, his or her brain waves become engaged in the alpha frequency. This is the brain wave state of heightened creativity and inspiration. When you engage in creative endeavors such as imagining or visualizing your brains waves register in alpha. In alpha, your conscious mind is less dominant and the subconscious mind is coming to the forefront. Alpha state is where your brain waves would register as when you go into a light trance (light hypnotic state). The subconscious mind does not register the difference between imaginary reality and physical reality. It simply does what it is told, shown, or imagined until it becomes a habit. That is why hypnotic suggestions can have powerful effects in the alpha brain wave state.

Theta Brain Waves: 4-7 Hz

When you are dreaming, in deep hypnosis, deep meditation, or “in the zone” while doing something athletic, you are in theta. Any repetitive movement or sounds will take you into the theta state easily. This state is where much of your subconscious potential lies and where the subconscious mind is totally dominant. Theta state is where a person’s brain waves register as they are taken deeper into hypnosis. In theta, many people can access past experiences and emotions more easily and typically, hypno-anesthesia can be experienced. Hypno-anesthesia occurs when people are so deeply relaxed that medical procedures like surgeries and invasive dental work can occur with perfect awareness but without pain or anxiety. Hypno-anesthesia is a valuable alternative to conventional anesthesia during childbirth, dental procedures, and surgeries because there are no side effects and there is no danger of dying from hypno-anesthesia.

Delta Brain Waves: 0.5-6 Hz

In this state of consciousness, you will not remember what you are experiencing because you are asleep and will eventually go into the stage of deep sleep or total unconsciousness. The moment you fall asleep and go into unconsciousness, you are in delta. Delta state is where a person’s brain waves register if he or she falls asleep during the hypnosis session. Most people do not fall asleep during hypnosis because the most useful hypnotic state is characterized by focused attention and deep relaxation. If a person falls asleep during hypnosis, s/he has lost focus even though relaxation is deep. People may fall asleep for a brief moment or two, but normally, they come back into a theta state where they can focus their attention.

The human brain can function in more than one brain wave state simultaneously. For example, you can be in beta as you enter into alpha. You may be completely awake one moment and then feel more relaxed and close your eyes all in a few seconds. You could also be dreaming while asleep (theta) and rise up into wakefulness (beta) and then go back into a higher frequency (theta) than previously.

If you are a hypnotherapist, you can deepen your client’s hypnotic trance at the beginning of a hypnosis session by first bringing them into alpha from beta by having them close their eyes, bringing the client to the brink of theta with relaxing suggestions and breathing exercises, then bringing them into beta again suddenly by snapping your fingers or clapping your hands and having the person open his or her eyes. Next, have the client close his or her eyes again and continue with any relaxing or deepening script to quickly and easily bring the client into a productive theta state. Producing theta waves, by having the client go into alpha, then beta, back into alpha, then into theta in rapid succession is sometimes referred to as the “Stair-Case Deepening Technique.”

Most people enter alpha and theta states during hypnosis, and each subsequent time they are hypnotized, they tend to go into deeper states of hypnosis or further into theta. Remember, if a person falls asleep during hypnosis, he or she has gone into delta or deep sleep. He or she is unconscious at this point, so suggestions cannot take hold in the subconscious mind. On the other end of the brain wave continuum, if the person remains in beta, his or her conscious mind is still dominant and he or she will have too many filters (beliefs, values, ethics, and past conditioning) to allow positive or healing suggestions to take hold.

Understanding brain waves can help you connect the experience of hypnosis with brain wave activity in your brain.
